Transformer Oil Testing and Analysis
Critical diagnostic services for insulating oil to prevent electrical failure and extend the lifespan of high-voltage transformers.
Predictive Maintenance for Electrical Assets
Safeguarding High-Value Equipment
**Transformer oil** serves two critical functions: **insulation** against high voltages and **cooling** of the core and windings. Because the oil degrades over time due to heat, moisture, and operational stress, regular condition monitoring is the most effective way to prevent catastrophic transformer failure and unplanned downtime.
Our specialized laboratory offers comprehensive testing to industry standards (**IS 1866, IEC, ASTM**). We diagnose the oil's condition through electrical, physical, and chemical tests, including **Dielectric Strength (BDV)**, **Water Content**, and the critical **Dissolved Gas Analysis (DGA)**, which pinpoints internal faults like partial discharge and overheating before they lead to permanent damage.
Key Diagnostic and Quality Tests
We perform full quality checks on new oil and routine diagnostic analysis on in-service oil as per the latest standards.
Dielectric Strength / Breakdown Voltage (BDV)
Measures the oil's ability to withstand electrical stress without breakdown. Low BDV indicates contamination (moisture/particles).
Test Method: IS 6792 / IEC 60156
Water Content
Determined via Karl Fischer titration. Excess moisture drastically reduces dielectric strength and accelerates insulation paper aging.
Test Method: IS 13567 / IEC 60814
Dissolved Gas Analysis (DGA)
Analyzes gases dissolved in the oil (H2, CH4, C2H6, C2H4, C2H2) to detect and diagnose incipient faults like overheating and partial discharge.
Test Method: IS 9434 / IEC 60599
Acidity (Neutralization Number)
Measures the level of acidic degradation products. High acidity can lead to corrosion of metallic parts and damage paper insulation.
Test Method: IS 1448 (P-2) / ASTM D664
Specific Resistance / Resistivity
Indicates the electrical insulation quality of the oil. Low resistivity suggests contamination or thermal stress.
Test Method: IS 6103 / IEC 60247
Interfacial Tension (IFT)
Measures the tension at the interface between the oil and water. IFT decreases significantly as oxidation and sludge formation begin.
Test Method: IS 6104 / ASTM D971
Tan Delta / Dissipation Factor
An indicator of the dielectric loss and the presence of contamination or soluble polar materials that increase energy dissipation.
Test Method: IS 6103 / IEC 60247
Sludge Content and Sediment
Checks for solid contaminants and oil oxidation residue that impede heat transfer and accumulate on windings.
Test Method: IS 1448 (P-30) / ASTM D4809
